Tour of Jakarta city..

Kris gave me a guided tour of Jakarta the next day :

Like sri lanka, Indonesia was colonised by the portugese and dutch who vied for the lucrative spice routes..

..they got independence in 1945 from the dutch and this is the Independence memorial..

Next we went to the Kota district, the old Colonial area in the north..

..lovely buildings and some interesting street food. This is what i call a mobile food stall..he was cooking rice pancakes with egg..

.. they even had their own version of the Boris bikes, complete with sun hats :)

...we stopped in an old colonial cafe called Batavia, amazing :

..this picture is of Sokaerno (who most indonesians love). He led the people from independence and who is affectionately known as the 'father of the people'.

He's different from Soeharto whose regime was the subject of the film, the 'Year of living Dangerously' starring Mel Gibson. He was corrupt and a lot of people starved under his rule leading to a communist revolt (which was unsuccessful)..
