Jogyjakarta, central java

This city is Java's cultural city (and a student city), famous for its Batiks, 'warung' puppets, and silver jewellery.

Got the train down..an 8 hour journey. I travelled in 'Executif' class for £15 - lovely jubbly.

At every station, the train was mobbed by small street urchins, i think asking for money. The way this little chap ran over the rail tracks cant have been safe ...

I found a room with hot water for £10 a night - whohooo !

Next day, i went on a tour of the city.

Went to a puppet factory, they make the puppets out of buffalo leather from sulawesi. It takes 2 weeks to carve and paint them...then they use them in puppet performances behind white screens.. Java is famous for these...

This is a silver jewellery factory. They make 92% silver here (or so they say) which is sterling silver..to be honest i found it a bit boring..

Then i visited the sultan's palace - the 'Kraton'. He employs 2000 people and people who live within his palace compound dont pay government tax...

Got back slept and then went to the Lucifer live music bar. This was fantastic, some really good bands here....
..at one point, these 2 swedish guys got up and played the lead guitar and trumpet to 'Paradise city' which ive been told is a really difficult peice to play..

..had a great time at this place.. off on a tour which starts at 5am (not again ...) tomorrow , so off to sleep..
