I chartered a 'Sawngthaew' (kind of like a tuk-tuk with two benches at the back) with an Italian American guy called Christian also staying at my guest house. The road was very windy and not easy on the stomach but it was well worth it when we arrived. The entrance to the temple was up a steep set of steps guarded by two mythical dragons :

It also had a fantastic view over Chiang Mai :

Next we drove for about 10 minutes to see the Hmong Hill tribe. Again this was quite commercial, but Christian and i did enjoy the stall where you could fire cross-bows at a banana tree (40p for 3 shots)..
This was the hill tribe museum with what's meant to be an authentic house. In reality, the houses they lived in were a lot shabbier...

The elders made and sold clothes and ornaments while the little kids played ....

The next day I left for Laos (or more formally the People's Democratic Republic of Laos)...about which i heard a lot of good things from other travellers...I would go on a slow boat which would take me 2 days and 2 nights...the cost was almost GBP 40 but this included one nights accommodation, transfers, food and slow boat tickets..
