A weekend in Kandy (the Hill Country) 21-23rd Jan

Last weekend I travelled to the Kandy region (Galaha) which is in the 'hill country' located in the centre of sri lanka. I went to stay at one of my uncle's holiday home there. We drove up in 2 cars (i went in my cousin's car with him, the wife and his kiddie). I had to drag myself out of bed at 5 am on friday which wasn't pleasant as ive been in low gear for a few months now, but it was worth it, as we escaped the worst of the morning rush hour in Colombo.

The house is in 2 parts built around a rock, each part cnnected by a walkway. The scenery from the windows is breath taking :
(I actually forgot to take a picture of the house from the outside, but took a few from the inside...)

My cousin & his kid (watching a film on the computer)...

...and the view during the day :

...and at sunset ...

You can actually see a mountain called 'Samanala Kanda' (translated as butterfly mountain). Its a place of pilgramage to all religions in sri lanka and the pilgrims go up during the night to see the sun rise. Brucey, this is the mountain where you and Stef got lost and ended up in some tea estate after too many guinesses the night before, maybe next time :)

Its quite cool at this elevation compared to the colombo heat and very quiet, so i slept like a log here...

In the morning, we let the ladies go to the botanical gardens and stare at plants all day (yawn...), while the boys (my cousin, myself & the kiddie) did the interesting stuff .. ie went exploring....
This place is amazing for wildlife. There are eagles here, you can see them quite often during the day & on sunday we saw about 3 black eagles (i think)...

..my cousin began to tire of carrying his son, but i persuaded his son, that 'dad' really did need the exercise (much to my cous's frustration.. - LOL) :

The gardner & former gardener have kept the garden tip top... not sure if its being in this part of the world but the colours of the flowers just seem amazing ..

Unfortunately, when we got back we found a yellow fronted barbet had died after flying into one of the windows. This was very sad, such a beatutiful bird, apparently endemic to sri lanka :
