I plumped for the one with the best location - a bit over budget at £24 per night for a standard room (and that was after haggling), but it was beautiful. On the upside, some of the other places i saw at half the cost or less were crusty to the core...when a room has AC and hot/cold water and employs so many staff, there's only a limit as to how much they can drop the price...
Every city in Rajasthan also seems to suffer from power cuts from around 7am - 9am. The better places like this have generators...
Called 'Jagat Niwas Palace', it wasn't actually a former palace but made from 2 converted Havelis and with stunning views over lake Pichola :

Udaipur is called the 'White City' or 'City of Lakes'. The White refers to the colour of the buildings and palaces which encircle the main lake Pichola...
